East Timor-16.jpg

Young boy washing after taking refuge in a makeshift camp in Dili.

It was set up in the back yard of the house of local pro-independence politician Manuel Carrascalao and housed approximately 120 IDP's (Internally Displaced People) from the Maubara district, who had left their homes after being violently intimidated by the pro-Indonesian militias.

Two weeks after this picture was taken the pro-Indonesia 'Aitarak' militia broke into the camp and killed 14 of the IDP's, watched on by Indonesian military and police.

Some were shot, and others were hacked to death with knives and machetes, including Manuelito, the 17-year-old son of Manuel Carrascalao.
